From the Executive Director

Dear Howard University Students,

For several months our community has been tested on every level. However, like true Bison, you continue to demonstrate your strength, tenacity, and willingness to adapt to the changes thrust upon us by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the Office of Career Services, we have worked diligently to ensure that recruitment and other career services are available to you during this time. We encourage you to stay connected with us and take advantage of the following career resources and virtual events that support your career pursuits. 

Summer Internships, Fellowships, Fulltime Employment – All employer events and on-campus interviews, which have not been canceled for the semester, are being conducted virtually. Continue to log on to Handshake to access jobs, internships, and newly posted employer events and interviews. Postings are updated daily. Remember that your user ID is your Howard University email (firstname.lastname@bison.howard.edu).

New HU Campus Career Connect Program – This program is a series of weekly virtual employer led engagements (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) providing resume clinics, mock interviews, and industry speaker/panel sessions, geared to educate and prepare you for summer employment. When you participate in these events you receive feedback directly from recruiters. Sign up and access these virtual sessions via your Handshake account. You may also view upcoming events by clicking on the ‘Events’ tab on the Career Services website (careerservices.howard.edu/events).

Mock Interviews – In addition to the weekly Thursday sessions, we’re excited to introduce to you Big Interview – a new Mock Interview learning and practice platform that is available to all Howard University students. This robust resource allows you to complete a series of learning modules and then sharpen your interviewing skills through video interviewing. Record your practice interviews and share them with your mentors, faculty, or career coach to get feedback on your skills. Register with Big Interview to create an account and then log in using your Howard University email (firstname.lastname@bison.howard.edu) as your user ID.

Start Smart/Work Smart Program: Working in partnership with the American Association of University Women, this online salary negotiation workshop is also open to all Howard University students. Though its purpose is to end the gender pay disparity between women and men, the competencies taught in this robust training program are equally relevant to men of color who want to master their salary negotiation skills and be equipped to compete on level terms with their counterparts. Register today. Start learning how to negotiate for what you’re worth. It’s time to level up!

Curricular Practical Training (CPT Employer Verifications) – International students who will be completing internships during the summer 2020, must complete a CPT Employer Verification before receiving final approval to work in the United States. Email your CPT Employment Verification forms to Mrs. Artemis Koger at akoger@howard.edu. After verification has been completed Mrs. Koger will return the signed forms to you via email.

Career Education & Coaching – (including Major & Career Exploration, Resume & Cover Letter Reviews/Assistance, LinkedIn Profile Review/Assistance, and General Career Advising Services are available in the Center for Academic Excellence. To request an appointment with a Career Adviser, log on to Bison Adviser, select Academic Advising, select the desired service, and follow the instructions to schedule an appointment with a Career Adviser.

Federal Work Study – Students with active placements should work with their supervisors to establish remote working. If you are unable to continue your position remotely, you may continue to receive compensation based on “scheduled” hours you would have worked if the university was operating normally through May 8 OR until you have exhausted your FWS allocation.  Please contact Financial Aid (finaid@howard.edu) to verify remaining funds. In either circumstance, students must continue to enter their hours in Peoplesoft AND submit time and attendance sheets to their supervisor for approval.
