The Office of Career Services in partnership with the Department of Alumni Relations and the Howard Unviersity Alumni Association has developed a program to increase the number of students who graduate with practical work experience, and increase the pipeline to full time employment, through building professional relationships with alumni. 


When you join the Bison Career Mentor Program, you are paired with a Student Mentee from your field of study or industry. You will have the opportunity to provide your student mentee with advice, guidance and begin buiding lasting personal and professional relationships. You will have the opportunity to share your knowledge, navigate a Bison in their career growth and development and share your unique experience. Through your mentorship to professional areas such as: industry specific professionalism, career readiness skills, work culture and more, student mentees can achieve their career goals.

Program Mission

Engage Equip and Empower!

  •  Alumni will establish the new standard for the student-alumni relationship
  • Alumni are matched with a student from their field of study or  industry  to provide one -on- one career coaching and support for 1 semester
  • Alumni will encourage students to attend career readiness skill workshops  about professionalism, negotiating,  communication, networking and more

Eligibility and Requirments

1. Must be an HU Alumni

2. Must have 3 or more years of professional experience

3.  Submit an Alumni Career Mentor application and resume or professional profile

4. Commit to participate as a mentor for 1 year to 2 students:

  • Paired for the fall semester: Junior or Senior
  • Paired for the spring semester: Freshmen or Sophomore




What if I am not local?
We encourage all alumni to apply. If you are not local you can become a virtual mentor.


How long do I have to commit?
We request a 1 year commitment.

 *If a mentor is unable to fulfill the 1 year comittment please provide 1 month notice.

How many events do I have to attend?
We encourage our mentors to attend the Meet Your Match Reception to meet each Student Mentee

I have never been a mentor before, will I receive some guidance?
Yes, if you are approved you will have access to the Mentor-Mentee Guide which will provide you with a guideline, tips and a checklist
